Redwoods are "not" cypress trees. Their genus is Sequoia Sepmerviren. Their closest living relative are the Seqoias found in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. The reason that coastal redwoods cannot grow in the actual northwest corner of the country, is because redwoods can only survive within a 15-20 mile band near the coast of Northern California. A place that is normally bathed in fog a great deal of the time. Redwoods will die in areas where the ground freezes from snow. Since there is no tap root, Snow will kill the wide and dispersed root structure.
