Aid To Israel Is Out Of Hand

Still, there are times when principle must surrender to pragmatism.
$1.2 billion would be a bargain were it to yield momentum toward a
genuine Israeli-Palestinian peace.
Aid To Israel Is Out Of Hand

American and Israeli diplomats have recently revived discussions
over our potential financial support of Israel's August withdrawal
from the Gaza Strip. Last summer, Israel sought $2 billion, but
suspended its request following the Katrina disaster. With popular
and congressional attention to New Orleans now dissipating, Israel
is again asking American taxpayers for help, although it has scaled
back to $1.2 billion in light of popular sentiment and signals from
Congress. This amount is supplemental to Israel's share of our
regular foreign aid that has run $3 billion to $4 billion annually
for decades.

Our officials have not publicly responded to the Israel request.
When they do, their answer should be a polite but firm "No". It is
reason enough to deny Israel's request that its settlements in the
West Bank and Gaza Strip are illegal. The U.N. Security Council has
held so, as has the International Court of Justice. As part of its
non-binding but authoritative judgment on Israel's wall, the
International Court of Justice concluded last year that Israeli
settlements in the Palestinian territories violate international
law. While the dollars Israel now seeks would fund housing and
infrastructure for new communities in Israel for the settlers,
paying for these, in effect, compensates Israel for giving back its
illegal settlements. Some 94 percent of Americans polled by CNN in
July opposed the Israeli request, even before Katrina and heightened
public awareness of our own acute domestic needs.

Still, there are times when principle must surrender to pragmatism.
$1.2 billion would be a bargain were it to yield momentum toward a
genuine Israeli-Palestinian peace.

Every indication, unfortunately, is to the contrary. Since the
decolonization of the Gaza Strip, Israel has only intensified its
colonization of the West Bank, including Jerusalem.

There, 430,000 Israeli settlers live in settlements built on land
seized from Palestinians -- and they are expanding every day. A city
holy to three great religions is being transformed into the
exclusive capital of one group -- Jews. Meanwhile Palestinian
Christian and Muslim families are slowly squeezed out of
neighborhoods they have inhabited peacefully for decades if not
centuries. A European Union study released last week determined that
Israeli policies toward Jerusalem are not motivated by security, but
by demographics, violating international law and Israel's
obligations under the Roadmap to Peace.

Israel touted the Gaza disengagement as a step forward. Yet in
October 2004, Dov Weisglass, advisor and close confidant of Israeli
prime minister Ariel Sharon, admitted in an interview in Israel that
withdrawal was a way to avoid peace negotiations with Palestinians,
consolidate control over the West Bank, and foil the creation of a
Palestinian state. No such pronouncements are necessary, however, to
the Palestinians. They witness Israel's continuing relentless
seizures of Palestinian lands, demolition of Palestinian homes,
construction of the separation wall, and expansion of Jewish-only
settlements. Palestinian Christians and Muslims are rendered
homeless, stripped of their property, and deprived of any semblance
at equal rights with their Jewish counterparts.

Historically, politicians of both major American parties have been
extremely generous to Israel, a country with a per capita income
equal to some in Europe. Its annual $3 billion to 4 billion often
exceeds a third of our total foreign aid -- more than all of sub-
Saharan Africa combined. Will our leaders, this time, honor the
apparent sentiments of the majority of Americans, or pursue the
electoral benefits that seemingly generate their knee-jerk support
of Israel?

As American taxpayers, we must assert ourselves. Our one-sided
support of Israel is a key reason for global enmity against us. When
we aid and abet Israel's continuing take over of Palestinian lands,
we only deepen our culpability, and frustrate our ambition to
restore American credibility in a crucial region of the world.

Fostering a genuine Middle East peace -- one based on justice and
equal rights for Jews, Christians and Muslims throughout the Holy
Land -- would greatly advance our national interests. Such a
resolution may cost well more than $1.2 billion, but will be worth
every penny. We should save our hard-earned tax dollars to support
that peace, not the entrenchment of Israeli colonialism, and the
future of conflict and violence it guarantees.

Re: Aid To Israel Is Out Of Hand

George Bisharat endlessly propagandize for the Palestinian cause,no matter what the truth or facts might be. It isnotable that althoughhe focuseson Israel, that he neglects to mention that the aid to Israel is part of the peace with Egypt CampDavid agreeemnt. He also neglects to mention the vast amount of unaccounted for money given to the Palestinains not only by the U.S.,but by the E.U., Japan, as well as by the Arab oil states and the other Moslem nations. In fact,it was recently revealed that the Palestinians have lied about their numbers in order to get greater aid! Whioe Mr.Bisharat's propagandizing is endless and one sided, many of us appreciate truth and an even handed approach more.

Re: Aid To Israel Is Out Of Hand

STOP SENDING MY TAX DOLLARS TO ISRAEL!!!

They use the money for war and more war

Where will the money go? Tanks to run over arabs, guns to shoot arabs and cash to bribe US politicians. Only Israel benefits from these endless Middle East wars. Iraq is the beginning. As we commit war-crimes in Baghdad, the US gov't commits treason at home by opening mail, eliminating habeas corpus, using the judiciary to steal private lands, banning books like "America Deceived" from Amazon and Wikipedia, conducting warrantless wiretaps and engaging in illegal wars on behalf of AIPAC's 'money-men'. Soon, another US false-flag operation will occur (sinking of an Aircraft Carrier by Mossad) and the US will invade Iran.. Then we'll invade Syria, then Saudi Arabia, then Lebanon (again) then ....

Re: Aid To Israel Is Out Of Hand

Well, if Mr. Bisharat is being ÖNE SIDED¨, so IS THE LAW, becuase the ISRAELI OCCUPATION IS ILLEGAL. How long are going to look the other way, AND GREASE ISRAEL´S palm to buy more weapons. I guess as long as WE, the USA, are occupying a country illegally. OUT OF HAND means time to reevaluate (that goes for the Camp David Agreement).

Re: Aid To Israel Is Out Of Hand

Until the American government helps the Katrina Victims, the soldiers coming back from Iraq/Iran who are poor and homeless because of their participation in the war, and the endless amount of Americans who are out of work, without health care insurance, etc; then aid to Israel should be a big fat "no." America doesn't even have money to rebuild its crumbling infrastructure (like the bridge collapse in Minnesota). We've over extended our credit -- which in turn is owned by other foreign governments.

America's struggling to help its own, and keep it's own economy and infrastructure afloat. Israel dragged us into this war with Iraq to protect it. (I don't care what the naysayers say on this one, Saddam had nothing to do with 9/11.) Israel needed protection and the U.S. needed to corner the market on oil, so they invaded Iraq. Americans have done all we can do for our "friend." I don't see Israel offering to help us in this war, nor help bail us out of our thousands of crises.

In fact, Israel has a budget surplus thanks to American aid. Our economy is so bad right now, it could be classified as a third-world economy, literally because of our deficits. It's time that Israel grows up a little and starts supporting itself.

Re: Aid To Israel Is Out Of Hand

And why must Americans pay the ZIonist crusader's tribute to Egypt and Jordan.

It isn't like Egypt and Jordan appeasing the Zionist's crusade is going to make the Zionist's occupation of palestinian lands any less of an offense. It isn't going to make Democrap and Republitrash support of Zionism any less of an offense.

Did Chamberland's appeasment of nazi invasion of Czechoslovakian lands make the nazi's invasion of Czechoslovakian lands any less of an offense against the Czechs??? Well, then why would anyone think/feel that Egypt and Jordan appeasing ZIonist occupation of niether Egypt nor Jordan mean a damned thing???

"Israeli occupation is illegal" wrote deo.
"illegal"? What makes the ZIonist's occupation of some Palestinian lands "illegal" while Zionist occupation of other Palestinian lands ("Israel") often gets called legal??? Is it because the judeo-christian dominated 1947 UN drew a line across a map of Palestine and gave the ZIonist crusaders thier blessings for the Zionist crusaders to be murderous thieves of Palestinian lands? 33 judeo-christian diplomats from 33 Judeo-christian dominated STATES gave Zionists thier blessings to steal Palestinian lands and to MURDER the Palestinians who dared to resist the ZIonist's theft of palestinian lands, and that is supposed to make the ZIonist's theft of SOME Palestinian lands "legal". Imagine 33 boltons atributing to themselves the authority of Satan, and try to sleep nights.

Re: Aid To Israel Is Out Of Hand

And WHAT IF...

Katrina victims were given new homes and good jobs and vetrans were also taken care of and if every bridge and dam in America was brand new and health care was universal to Americans and America was a wonderfull paradise and there were trillions of extra dollars in taxes just laying around collecting dust??? Would America's whore politicians selling out America's peace by supplying Zionist crusaders with the means to destroy our Palestinian neighbors lives and lifes to steal the Palestinian's homeland then be any less of an offense???

Re: Aid To Israel Is Out Of Hand

Aid to Israel is an excellent investment- Israel is Americas only real ally in the region, and a partner in the war on terror.

Why Saudi Arabia got 10 billion I can't understand- thats where oil comes from- what do they need our money for?

Why does this person call Jerusalem a colony? Jerusalem, city of David, capital of the Jewish stae for millenea? A colony of what?

Re: Aid To Israel Is Out Of Hand

Jerusalem? What is that supposed to mean???

Zionists seem to think/feel that if they give new names to Zionist occupied palestinian cities, that it will make those cities Zionist cities, rather than just Zionist occupied cities.

But thanks for admitting that the Democraps and Republitrash support the ZIonist's bloodsoaked crusade so that those whore of babelon politicians can rule the region. It doesn't make thier support of the Zionist crusade any less of an offense and it mkes it clear that thier offensive suport of ZIonism is self serving.

Saudi royals pay for the armes they get.

America, How does it feel being robbed without a gun and in plain sight of the world? The whole world saw how 'rich' you were when you took care of your OWN citizens during the Katarina disaster. Now we can clearly see how much extra money you have by financing ethnical cleansing in the middle east and by supporting some of the most cruelest dictators in world (20 bn to Saudi-Arabia while nothing for Darfur or Bangladesh, wow! You must be SOOO proud!). Whats next? Allowing Putin to outsource his renditions activities to CIA? What happened to you? What happened to that dream on that document 300 hundred years ago?

Help our friends fight our enemies

Israel is doing incredible work, not just trying to keep itself alive against enemies on all sides. Many important medical and technological advances came out of Israel- solar tech, drip irrigation, medical advancements, internet firewalls, cell phone technology, instant messaging. Even the php software that runs the Baltimore IMC has its roots in israel. An investment in Israel is an investent in the future. Its a good use of AMerican taxpayer money.
