Students HUNGER STRIKE for $3 million for Peer to Peer

Students will HUNGER STRIKE starting May 30^th, 2008 if the Mayor does not add $3million into the Budget for Peer-to-Peer Youth Enterprises.

The Starting location is the Amphitheater 5:30 p.m. on Friday, May 30th . Demonstrators will then march to the base of the Legg Mason building 100 Light St. (on the corner of Light St. and Pratt St.) where the hunger strikers will be stationed.

We no longer accept officials denying responsibility for the well-being of Baltimore's youth. All responsible officials should come together until funding is found for youth jobs in the knowledge-based economy.

We demand that 3 million dollars be added to the City's budget to fund Peer-to-Peer Youth Enterprises.

We demand a meeting with Mayor Shelia Dixon, CEO of Baltimore City Schools Dr. Alonso, The President of City Council Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, Governor Martin O'Malley, the Family League, the Baltimore Community Foundation, and the peer-to-peer representatives to discuss how the 3 million dollars will be financed in the City's Budget.

Please note that we will only accept money from the Rainy Day Fund or sources not previously designated to youth. Groups like Baltimore Urban Debate League, Kids on the Hill, Youth as Resources, Wide Angle Youth Media, Youth Dreamers, Algebra Project, Hip Hop Congress, Liberty Learning Center, Chesapeake Center for Youth Development and more are all a part of this Peer to Peer movement.

About Peer-to Peer-Youth Enterprises:

1. In Peer-to-Peer Youth Enterprises, young people are paid to share knowledge and skills with other peers. This means peers teaching/training peers and using their knowledge to help peers reach goals.

2. Peer-to-Peer Youth Enterprises can be community based, and school based. Peers can be paid to teach/share skills regarding academics, art, and a variety of other skills.

3. Peer-to-Peer Youth Enterprises are youth led. Adults are there to teach specific skills, and guide the work - but the young people participating in these enterprises lead each group.

4. Paid peers learn time management, responsibility, problem solving, while they gain expertise about the knowledge they impart to other youth.

5. Paid peers transfer knowledge or teach their technical or academic skill, and are also role models and mentors to other youth.

7. Paid peers earn up to $10-$15 per hour. Paid peers range from ages 10-13 (who earn stipends) and 14-24 (who earn stipends or formal wages). Peers served are anyone under 24 years old

8. This money will be leveraged with other investments from foundations, corporations, individuals, and the school system into the
Peer-to-Peer Youth Enterprises Investment Fund

The Peer-to-Peer Youth Enterprise groups have come together to form this Peer-to-Peer Movement to accomplish four (4) main things:

1. Change the way Baltimore thinks of youth, from trouble makers to part of the knowledge based economy and positive contributors.

2. Work to build an Investment Fund that will ensure a steady stream of funding in order to pay the young people involved.

3. Design a fair and unique process for distribution of these funds and reporting success

4. Bring the young people in these groups together to learn from each other, publicize the Peer-to-Peer efforts to their respective audiences, and be involved in the Peer-to-Peer Youth Enterprises Movement.

Re: Students HUNGER STRIKE for $3 million for Peer to Peer

I wonder how you will win this one. There is nothing stupider than a hunger strike, especially by "snort" students. Either you starve and die, problem solved, or you give up and eat, problem solved. By the way duda, demand in one hand and shit in the other, see which one gets fuller faster.

Re: Students HUNGER STRIKE for $3 million for Peer to Peer

I've never really understood what people get out of trolling. I hope whatever perverse little emotional thrill you get out of denigrating the exceptionally courageous and admirable efforts of students to secure an education for themselves and for their communities is worth your time. It's not worth mine!

Re: Students HUNGER STRIKE for $3 million for Peer to Peer

first off all, this is a great idea, but unfortunately the city is not behind this idea. i'll tell you why...they have to worry about getting there investment back, unfortunately this would be a radical program in there eyes with alot of risk...i'm personally all for changes and new ideas such as this, but these city hall bureacrats expect some type of return, and in this istance that return would be in tax dollars, which isn't foreseeable, and the job prospects for inner city youth are unfortunately of no concern to the city because again, unfortunately youth are incapable(for many reasons) right now of mounting a serious protest or defense against the city. This is small group of protesters, they first work on stimulating people's minds to their cause before they turn to civil disobedience. These students should be commended in their effort but the issue is so much deeper than 3 million dollars of funding, it runs deep into the fabric of society, in the family structure, the worldview by which americans live by, and most importantly capitalism...it's not just the municipal city govt, but the federal govt bureacracy and what most people don't realize, the private business conglomerates that are supposedly seperate from the govt. So even though these students should be commended, they are not focusing on the actual problem they are focusing on an outcome from the problem. lastly, a hunger strike especially by students doesn't do what it intends to. no one cares about some students who are on a hunger strike, maybe if you acted in civil disobedience, but a hunger strike is only applicable ina jail scenario really. Also, the education system here is also what is at fault, it needs to be drastically reformed, i see the students don't necessarily advocate that. also, what hurts this idea is that the creators would be the ones obviously getting the jobs to help peers, to some that may seem like a conflict of interest. but i agree that a federally mandated area be assigned to help youths in the nation. Youths especially in the workplace and society are cast away instead of concentrated on. education(all education) should be free. to each according to his need, to each according to his ability-karl marx i also laud the motivation of the students of local people helping other local people.

Re: Students HUNGER STRIKE for $3 million for Peer to Peer

in terms of the potential for a hunger strike to change things, the last big win for a social justice movement in baltimore - the united workers winning a living wage for the cleaners at camden yards - was actually accomplished through a multi-year campaign that was to culminate in a hunger strike. the threat of the hunger strike, combined with all the other pressure the uwa had put on the stadium, was eventually enough to make them cave in and pay the cleaners a fair wage.

Re: Students HUNGER STRIKE for $3 million for Peer to Peer

You don't understand because you are not capable of intelligent reasoning, duda. Just because I don't agree with your idiot article and the lame hunger strike, I am trolling. Shit, out of the mouth of progressive morons comes boring stupidity. If this is your definition of courage, then you are a sad, clueless insulated little boy. Why do you think that the mayor is going to give time of day to your students and their hunger strike?? So demand in one hand and shit in the other, etc. If this program had any merit, it would have been funded. Thanks to the mayor for not wasting tax money on this stupid boondoggle.

Re: Re: Students HUNGER STRIKE for $3 million for Peer to Peer

I am confident that Mr. Duda is capable of intelligent reasoning. Even beyond intelligent reasoning he can convey an idea in a persuasive manner without using such colorful insults as "idiot article", "lame hunger strike", "boring stupidity", "sad, clueless insulted little".

And he is not calling you a troll because you are disagreeing, he is calling you a troll because you are posting baseless insults anonymously.

PLEASE SHUT UP!!!

Re: Students HUNGER STRIKE for $3 million for Peer to Peer

Last night I just happened to catch Mayor Sheila Dixon on television. She said (after it was announced that Baltimore's homicide rate continues to decline, 79 murders so far this year when last year at this time it was 120)

"We won't claim victory until our young people are completing high school and not dropping out and engaging in that market. We can't claim victory until one murder is too much," she said.

I was shocked she said this - just a week and a half after she refused to grant a formal meeting to the youth camped outside of City Hall!

Re: Re: Students HUNGER STRIKE for $3 million for Peer to Peer

thats what im saying. they dont wanna glamorize a black man being wise when the truth it lies underneath guns and homicides. suicides are glamorized being looked over like its the talk of the united states under the residents eyes but when youth make a change all imporant eyes they wanna hide. so of course this is ridiculous.
