Are Independent Journalists Being 'Executed' By the Bush Administration?

The number of casualties among independent journalists in Iraq is higher, percent-wise than ANY OTHER GROUP in the war zone.
Are Independent Journalists Being 'Executed' By the Bush Administration?

Since the war started, a total of at least half a dozen journalists have been killed - an outrageously high percentage of casualties - the highest for any single group of people in the war zone, from the civilian support personnel to the soldiers themselves. It seems way, way beyond coincidence that most of the fallen journalists are non-embedded writers dedicated to telling the truth. The latest death is British reporter (Channel 4, ITN) Gaby Rado, covering the action in Northern Iraq. Rado died under mysterious circumstances in a "fall" from a hotel roof. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/2900379.stm Not long before, fellow ITN journalist Terry Lloyd was killed in Iraq by 'friendly fire' from Allied forces. Lloyd was one of the "unilateral" reporters, travelling freely around the war zone, as opposed to being "embedded."

A Frightening Overview:

MARCH 11: British veteran Journalist Kate Adie warns that US. plans to target independent journalists. (story on Adie's interview on an Irish radio station: http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=8238

MARCH 30: As of this date, at least 5 independent and/or non-embedded journalists in Iraq have died from car bombs, friendly fire or mysterious accidents or have mysteirously disappeared.

FALLEN HEROES

DEAD or presumed dead:

Gaby Rado, ITN journalist, in northern Iraq from mysterious fall from roof
Terry Lloyd, ITN journalist in southern Iraq - "friendly fire"
Fred Nerac, ITN cameraman "" "friendly fire"
Hussein Othman, ITN translator "" friendly fire
Paul Moran, 39 Freelance cameraman with the Australian Broadcasting Corp., no. Iraq - car bomb

INJURED (partial list)

Daniel Demoustier, ITN cameraman - friendly fire
Eric Campbell, ABC correspondent - friendly fire

MISSING:

Matthew McAllester, journalist, Newsday, Baghdad
Moises Sama, cameraman, Newsday, Baghdad

These two newsfolk were declared missing as of March 25 from Iraq after being ordered to leave. Their hotel room was completely cleaned out, no word left. Here's the story from Newsday: http://www.newsday.com/ny-bzjour0328,0,5484723.story?coll=ny-top-adrail

There are two alternative theories here:

1. They were killed by the Iraqi government: This is the story that is being heavily implied by US government sources, because the Iraqis officially expelled them. But why "pre-announce" an execution and thus clearly draw the world's outrage? This isn't the Saddam regime's style. They would have been more likely to arrest and "try" the reporters very publicly as "spies," levying highly-publicized, specific charges.

2. The two were real journalists who had acquired information that would be damaging to US/UK interests. They were intercepted on their way out of Iraq, or even in Syria, and murdered to prevent them from filing these stories.

I am putting my money on theory 2, especially as McAllester has written extensively on the plight of Iraqi children in the wake of UN sanctions and received the full accreditation of the Iraqi government to write on Iraq just a few months back.

Here's a story from Newsday (3/30) that offers more evidence of the menacing attitude of US military official toward independent-minded journalists: "Four journalists, two Israeli and two Portuguese, trailing coalition troops in Iraq, were arrested by American soldiers and expelled from the country after a harrowing period of custody in which they said they were mistreated and accused of being Iraqi spies." http://www.newsday.com/news/nationworld/iraq/ny-wojour303198274mar30,0,2508841.story?coll=ny%2Dtop%2Dheadlines

Meanwhile, back home, in the safety of their comfy studios and dressing rooms, Tim Russert, Tom Brokaw, George Will, Katie Couric, Dan Rather, et al, continue to promote the war and disseminte propaganda with a callous disregard for the safety of American troops or the honor of their nation.

Meanwhile, the courageous, honest - and honorable - reporters in the war zone must be wondering: "Who's next?"

Update: On 3/30, the US bombed the Iraq Ministery of Information in Baghdad Was Strike on Iraqi Ministry of Information a Murderous Attack on Western
Journalists Likely to Tell the Truth?

When the Bushfeld Ministry of Propaganda released the news of the strike on the Baghdad Ministry of Information, they described it as the destruction of the Iraqi "propaganda center." What they didn't mention was that the building was also being used by western reporters - reporters
who, as eyewitnesses inside Baghdad, are in a position to report the TRUTH. So far in this war, nearly 10 reporters have been killed orinjured by car bombs, friendly fire or "mysterious accidents" or "disappeared"
None of them wereUS-government-controlled "embeddees". Was
thisbombingan attemptto "eliminate" as many troublesome reporters as possible in murderous attack?

Re: Are Independent Journalists Being 'Executed' By the Bush Administration?

Along with the journalists, why was Connie Chung terminated from CNN? Peter Arnet's free speach caused him to be terminated by MSNBC and NBC. Bush is trying to end free speach that harms him. Isn't that dictatorship? Demcrats have to work hard to terminate Bush.

Re: Are Independent Journalists Being 'Executed' By the Bush Administration?

More likely than either theory is that they were readily identifiable as Anglo-american types. They were recognized and killed by people doing their own small part to boot the US/UK out of Iraq.

Honestly if Iraq had invaded the Inner Harbor, and some Journalist with a turban was running around interviewing people after some cruise missiles took out some joint JPL/JHU lab. Do you think that journalist would be safe walking down Charles Steet?

Of course then you can read this article about how the US Military is threating to elimiate independent journalists... truth is stranger than a conspiracy theory.

Re: Are Independent Journalists Being 'Executed' By the Bush Administration?

DOESN'T SURPRISE ME IN THE LEAST. SHAME ON YOU, DAN RATHER! YOU WERE ONCE A LION, UNAFRAID TO SHAME THE PRESIDENT ON NETWORK TELEVISION (SEE NIXON-VIETNAM). I WAS ALWAYS TAUGHT THAT JOURNALISTS WERE THE WATCHDOG OF THE PRESS. WHO IS OUR WATCHDOG NOW, DAN RATHER? HE'S JUST A SCARED OLD MAN, PLAYING ALONG SO HE WON'T LOSE HIS PENSION.

Re: Are Independent Journalists Being 'Executed' By the Bush Administration?

I can't say whether journalists are being intentionally killed - but as a Brit I can say that the Inquirer (and its rival and ex stablemate 'The Register') are both well known UK based IT sites, and nothing to do with an Irish radio station. "The Reg" mentioned ~10 days ago that the US.mil were inclined to treat unidentified satellite phone transmissions in Iraq as hostile, and presumably a legitimate target. (I can't find the article right now). I wonder how many of the disappeared were equipped with satellite phones?

Re: Are Independent Journalists Being 'Executed' By the Bush Administration?

Your article on independent journalists being executed by Bush proves conclusively that there are indeed grassy knolls in Iraq, they are not limited to Dallas.

Re: Are Independent Journalists Being 'Executed' By the Bush Administration?

War is the enemy of human rights, free speech, democracy and above all life itself.

Re: Are Independent Journalists Being 'Executed' By the Bush Administration?

so this is what they mean by "truth is the first casulty of war"

Re: Are Independent Journalists Being 'Executed' By the Bush Administration?

since the kosovo conflict, journalists are now "fair game" and these stories, however terrribly unfortunate, need to continue to be reported so that the public realize that reporters are risking their lives at every moment to get the information out.

Re: Are Independent Journalists Being 'Executed' By the Bush Administration?

Very interesting reading. The Kate Adie interview was something I've already read about

Does anyone have figures of indy journalists in blue-on-blue incidents during Afghanistan or the first Gulf War?

Re: Are Independent Journalists Being 'Executed' By the Bush Administration?

Thank God for the internet. I hope that this is one medium which will be used to provide the truth and combat the lies of the "Coalition of the Willing".The embedded Journalists sing for their sixpence
As for me I hope that Bush gets strung up/lynched like Mussolini was. I think he is too much of a coward to take his life as Hitler did.

Re: Are Independent Journalists Being 'Executed' By the Bush Administration?

To Mike Uke, There are many journalist in Bagdad from many countries, The british, Americans and others who have been on " On the inside" with regulaur interviews with top officials, they move freely about to do their job. I would do a little research starting with Robert Fisk. I think his newspaper is TheIndependent.

Re: Are Independent Journalists Being 'Executed' By the Bush Administration?

I am not surprised that this actually happened. The U.S. is known, as we know, for many hateful acts. This is just another thing that we can add to the list. What's going to happen in the long run is that the U.S. will go down in every sense, just like every other super power that has once lived.

Re: Are Independent Journalists Being 'Executed' By the Bush Administration?

I wouldn't doubt it at all. When the Red Cross spoke out
against the last bombing practice against a country... I told everyone watch Bush have the Red Cross bombed and sure enough look what happned.

Re: Are Independent Journalists Being 'Executed' By the Bush Administration?

Nothing happens by accident. For every action there is.."

Something strange is going on with honest and truthful reporters in Iraq. Along with Arnett being fired and Rivera being blasted by critics. Propaganda wars and info wars. I receive some of my news on the war thru Russian and middle eastern news sites. Much less biased than the state department via fox news pentagon propaganda.

Re: Are Independent Journalists Being 'Executed' By the Bush Administration?

i think so. Disgusting.

Re: Are Independent Journalists Being 'Executed' By the Bush Administration?

Well, it's a theory, like any other. The other side of the coin would be something like this: American/British forces find men/women with cameras, recording and communication equipment, not sanctioned to be embedded with troop units, and investigate whether they are spies for Iraq. They find out that they are and, as it is wartime, eliminate them on the spot. It is well known that "journalist" is frequently used as a cover for intelligence operatives.

Proof? None. Just like Cherly Seal, who wrote this article.

Re: Are Independent Journalists Being 'Executed' By the Bush Administration?

I am reading William Blume's The Killing of Hope, which is all about U.S. military interventions from '47-'94, so unfortunately, I am not surprised that this would be happening. It is a very sad and trying time to be an inhabitant of this country.

Re: Are Independent Journalists Being 'Executed' By the Bush Administration?

Who to believe? I question these concpiracy theorists as much as I do the neo-conservative sect. I can only surmise that the reasons behind this conflict are as plain as day...the struggle for oil in these last years of an oil rich planet (see Peak Oil...it's been an issue for years but I bet you own a car). It's trillions of dollars held by foriegn interests (countries and corporations) that teeters so pricariously at the rise of a potentially threatening Euro (What happens when the dollar is dumped in favor of the Euro....trillions glutting the economy...unprecedented inflation and suddenly all bets are off. Why would these things be an issue? Hmm let me see...perhaps it's our desire to buy sandals at $50 a pop....or coffee for $5...totally oblivious to the notion of hunger unless it's on TV. We want peace...sure...it's easy for a guilt ridden glutton to say....but what are we willing to give up in order to share a piece of the ever-diminishing pie with the rest of the world. Why are we so much more enlightened than our ancestors who waged war for trivial things like trade routes and access to salt mines? How many of you have experienced bread lines...back stabbing by dear friends over a piece of meat? Probably none....You're looking for an enemy of mankind...look in the mirror...the enemy is us....I too am guilty...I'm as guilty as I am human.

Re: Are Independent Journalists Being 'Executed' By the Bush Administration?

As intresting as the prospect of a great conspiracy against "The Truth" sounds, I don't buy it. Nor do I buy into whats shown on the telly. The only truth we will ever know is that we will never know what exactly is/was happening. Too often when I check independant new sites/networks, the vast majority of them do almost nothing but blast Bush/Republicans. So its a bit hard to believe any side in this. Wether or not people admit it, everyone, is putting thier spin into what they claim as "the truth" To think else wise is a bit naive. Welcome to the 21st Century people, where paranioa is a survival trait, and nolonger a desease. Question EVERYTHING.

Re: Are Independent Journalists Being 'Executed' By the Bush Administration?

This material is very good, truthteller, eyeopener. Thanks much.Hope there will be more interesting facts.Regards/Petrov

Re: Are Independent Journalists Being 'Executed' By the Bush Administration?

Oh, my what wonderful fiction. If it were true, Cheryl Seal would already be dead----Mysteriously of course. Morons everywhere you look

Re: Are Independent Journalists Being 'Executed' By the Bush Administration?

Correction: Eric Campbell was injured by shrapnel from the car bomb that killed Paul Moran, not from friendly fire. Nice conspiracy theory though.

Re: Are Independent Journalists Being 'Executed' By the Bush Administration?

These reports are consistent with the attempt to control the circulation of information, abroad, and at home. What we are dealing with is a fascistic regime, bent on the total manipulation of thought and action, akin to that found in the dystopian nightmare of 1984.
