Will Syria Withdraw Completely from Occupied Lebanon?
22 Sep 2004
By this morning (Thursday), the Syrian regime has pulled only around 3,000 of its occupation troops from Lebanon. The Syrian troops slowed down the process in which it called earlier “comprehensive redeployment”.
The Syrian regime started pulling out its troops Tuesday after high local, regional and international pressure. However, it seems that the process slowed down when the regime failed to release the pressure calling for a full Syrian withdrawal.
On the other hand, the Syrian-appointed government in occupied Lebanon is in complete confusion. The puppet regime in Lebanon was not informed about the Syrian pullout until the Syrian Baath took the decision. The Defense Minister in the Syrian-appointed government in Lebanon had to contradict the Syrian reports, and announced that Syria will not completely pullout from occupied Lebanese territories until Israel pullout from the occupied Arabic territories.
They Syrian withdrawal of Lebanon will leave its proxy regime in Lebanon in weak situation. The government of occupied Lebanon lakes popularity as well as legitimacy. The government members fear the same fate of the pro-Israeli militias who were left alone after the Israeli pullout from South Lebanon in 2000.
No one knows any details about the pullout schedule because the Syrian regime is only person to decide on that matter. The international community replied by calling for a complete pullout for the Syrian troops from Lebanon according to the UN Resolution 1559.
The United States is not letting Syria off the hook. The Bush administration has again demanded a total military pullout from Lebanon instead of the current redeployment operation, which was termed "insufficient" and "fails to meet the requirements of U.N. resolution 1559."
"We remain deeply concerned about the Syrian intervention in Lebanon and reiterate that, in accordance with Security Council resolution 1559, Syria withdraw all of its forces from Lebanon," State Department deputy spokesman Adam Ereli told reporters in Washington.
