LOCAL Commentary :: Baltimore MD

Hey IMC...

whats going on?
Hey. Not to be a jerk but a few events (Reclaim the Streets, and the Nov. 3rd action) just happened and IMC did no coverage as I have seen or even put any of the independent articles in the feature section. It's pretty lame. Other IMCs feature articles about stuff that occurs in their areas. All I see here are opinion features. It is just my opinion that Baltimore IMC should feature some more stuff that acutally local news. Thanks for your work.

Re: Hey IMC...

I agree...there was some serious shit going on, but it seemed that IMC was only going to provide some lame-duck commentary about how Kerry was doing (or should I say NOT doing). Where was the coverage of the Green attack on the Council? Where was the coverage of RTS, enough to warrant a feature? Where was the protest coverage? I mean, just driving past the Washington Monument on Charles St. on Wednesday I saw the biggest banner drop in Baltimore.

Where' the coverage? I know we make up the media, but we tried! We put it on the newswire, and my opinion (and, obviously, the opinion of many others who patronize this site) this stuff deserved feature status!

Re: Hey IMC...

You're right, and you're right.

On the first point, re: Nov 2 & Nov 3, we're working on advancing some newswire material to the home page. (I might even take a crack at it now).

On the Second point, see our Green Coverage below. It is still under consideration for "feature" (homepage) coverage.

Finally, Baltimore IMC is actively recruiting for people to participate in the Editorial Collective, as well as more loosely. The opportunities are wide open for anyone with juice and decent reporting/writing capacity.

Send me note if you're interested.

Re: Hey IMC...

I think the reason nothing made it onto the feature column very fast was that there were a number of short articles, some with interesting pictures, but no "feature-legnth" overall article talking about either Nov. 2 or Nov. 3 in depth. At the Tuesday IMC meeting, we discussed this problem and have tried to "commission" or encourage certain individuals who were at the events to write a feature-legnth article. However, since that hasn't materialized, I agree that it's better to have a short article on the feature column than nothing at all. (As an aside, I almost submitted one for feature status but couldn't decide which one to pick.)

I think the summary feature ends up being a good way to deal with the plethora of decent short articles and lack of legnthy articles. Sorry it took so long.

Re: Hey IMC...

No to mention the fact that the IMC is as much you as it is anyone else. If you want to see more coverage of certain things, you may want to consider actually providing it rather than waiting around for someone else to do it. That's what the IMC is all about, after all...

Re: Hey IMC...

thats true but some folks volunteer to do media work while others may fill other duties. I would not ask the organizers of RTS or someone involved in a legal fight with the city or anything else like that to write the article. Ya know?
